PURSUING THE REVAMPING AND RESOURCEFULNESS AGENDA: MY VISION FOR THE OFFICE OF LOCAL NUGS PRESIDENT 2017/2018 ACADEMIC YEAR
In a bid to serve a wider spectrum of my colleague Ghanaian students through the office of National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), UEWK President, I outline my vision, mission and intentions for running for the office as follows for the perusal and consideration of all stakeholders.
VISION
To create a local secretariat that is well built to undertake its activities and make it well poised to fight for the collective interests of the Ghanaian student.
MISSION
To pursue the 2Rs Agenda: to revamp and resourcefulness of the local secretariat.
POLICIES, IDEAS AND INITIATIVES IN ACHIEVEING THE MISSION AND VISION
REVAMPING
Under this, I propose a set of initiatives, some of which novel and the enrichment of existing ones to give the local secretariat a new look and give students the opportunities to uplift themselves and secure a conducive atmosphere for academic work. The items here are as follows
1. Miss Adorable Celebration: The celebration of this program has been celebrated over the years, but it will be revamped in a grand style to generate income for the union. Miss Adorable will be launched in the first semester to gain more publicity and also help the ladies to get more grooming time. Over the years, the winner to this show becomes dormant till the time she hands over her crown to the newly crowned queen. These ladies coming from their respective regions will have ten balloted initiative and the selected initiative will be implemented when she becomes the next Miss Adorable. Aside the ladies getting more space to be groomed, they will also have time to discuss their selected initiative with their patrons.
2. Awards, Drama and Fashion Show: Looking at the way this program has been organised over the years, it can be improved upon by involving our reputable people of English, our noble fashion students and the catering students. Our fashion students have been doing a great work but their works are not showcased to the student populace. This revamping will help promote sole proprietorship, make visible what the fashion students have been doing and climax our awards and drama by the people of English.
3. SSNIT Student Loan Registration: The regular SSNIT loan registration which is facilitated by the Secretariat will be decentralized to get more students to register because even having a SSNIT number is now a prerequisite to register one for national service. Centres will be mounted at vantage points on campus such as SRC secretariat and Opoku Ware II hall.
4. Attending to the physically challenged: Strenghting of the physically challenged association and also create avenue for them to easily get their soveniors and also create a platform for them when SRC, NUGS, ASA, MASA, TECHSA, INFOTESS and other associations are celebrating their week.
RESOURCEFULNESS
As we have constituted a revamped NUGS, and then we can all see a renewed union to be well poised to represent our collective interest. This would be done as follows:
1. Entrepreneur Start Up Competition: Apart from the already existing student award show which seeks to motivate students, I will introduce a student entrepreneurship completion dapped INVEST UEW-K. This would be an exciting new opportunity for us the students to develop our innovative ideas and projects, to create positive changes in our communities and world as a whole.
INVEST UEW-K entrepreneurship challenge will be an early stage social innovative support competition, providing seed capital business incubation, social mandate training and exposure to the viable social enterprise for Coltek students with entrepreneurial spirits.
2. Indigenous Cultural Display: Apart from the already existing Beauty pageant and Talent show, I will introduce an indigenous cultural show which will involve celebrating our history, various rich cultures and achievements as a nation.
This activity would be added to the existing formalities or observances taken place in the NUGS week celebration. There would be cultural displays of indigenous clothing, music, dance and a food bazaar in respect to the various Regions to spice up the NUGS week celebration.
3. Student Grievances Chat Room: Many students have problems they want to address each every day and others have things to seek clarifications on but the grounds for that are not levelled. In my reign I will introduce an avenue for all students to channel all their grievances to and this will better the student populace and also the student leadership in general. This chat room will not be a whatapp based chat up but it will go beyond that because whatapp can only accommodate only 256 participants on a page and different pages cannot be created for such word.
MAJOR PROBLEMS TO BE ENCOUNTERED
A major problem facing the office is finance or resources needed to undertake its activities for the benefit of the Ghanaian student. This mostly thwarts its progress in serving student interest.
HOW WE INTEND TO TACKLE IT
1. First of all, we will lobby strongly, the SRC, to increase the quota of the SRC dues to NUGS by a significant margin.
2. We will also seek to cut down the cost of running the office as seen in the restructure column above.
3. We will also lead a strong sponsorship drive from well to do entities by enticing them with the brilliant programs stated above.
Fellow Ghanaian student, my dear people, I envisage a student union that the ordinary student can believe in. It always seems impossible until it is done. I come not with promises but assurances that hinges on the tenets of unity in our diversity and the utmost desire to get things done. I am positive and optimistic about this and that is why I am in this. My dear people trust one more time. I believe, lets believe. NUGS will work again!!!
